How a 1507 German Map Became America’s Birth Certificate

Martin Waldseemüller’s 1507 world map conserved at the @librarycongress is certainly one of the world’s most important maps. And today, 553 year since Waldseemüller’s birth on September 11, 1470, let’s celebrate the map that named “America.” Waldseemüller’s 1507 world map grew out of an ambitious project in St. Dié, near Strasbourg, France, during the first decade of the sixteenth century, to document and update new geographic knowledge derived from the discoveries of the late fifteenth and the
