The chrysalis (or pupa) is the 3rd stage of the Painted Lady butterfly's life cycle! During this stage, the caterpillar undergoes the important transformation to become an adult Painted Lady butterfly. This stages lasts anywhere from 7-12 days. Our third graders recently raised butterflies to learn about the life cycle and the amazing process of metamorphosis. They observed each stage up close—from tiny caterpillars to chrysalises to Painted Lady butterflies.
