So I know everyone says that you shouldn’t prune big leaf and oakleaf hydrangeas… but here’s what I noticed since I stopped listening to advice I read on the internet (yes, the irony is not lost on me 😜) 1. If I prune late summer and am done by the first week in August, next year my hydrangeas look better than ever: they’re more branches and have more blooms that don’t flop on long leggy branches.2.
