This Gopher Tortoise (23-1839) was discovered by Fort Lauderdale residents because his shell had been painted with bright colors. Fortunately, he was in good health otherwise. Because tortoises and other turtle species absorb vitamins via the sun’s UV rays, paint on their shell can severely compromise their health and can also prevent them from camouflaging from predators. After 79 days in rehabilitation, his shell was back to its normal coloration and he was ready to return to the wild. Happy F
